Smith Leaves Kentucky To Join Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- Tubby Smith is leaving the University of
Kentucky to become the head basketball coach at Minnesota. He'll be
introduced as the Golden Golphers' 16th coach at a noon news
conference tomorrow.

Smith's ten-year reign at Kentucky started with a national
championship, but he's come under fire in recent years for not
getting the team back to the Final Four since then. Kentucky
finished 22-and-12 this season and was knocked out of the N-C-A-A
tournament in the second round. Smith's Wildcats have lost ten or
more games five times, more than under any other Kentucky coach.

The pressure is expected to be less at Minnesota, where the team
went 9-and-22 this season. Coach Don Monson was forced out seven
games into the season after a combined 118-and-106 mark in eight
seasons.
