COLLEGE STATION -- The 3rd-ranked Texas A&M softball team will open Big 12 Conference play when it hosts the Iowa State Cyclones in a two-game series at the Aggie Softball Complex. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, with the second game to follow on Sunday.

“We are excited to start the Big 12 season,” commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. “Our conference is incredibly strong this year and I expect at least seven of our teams to be competing in the NCAA Tournament. Iowa State has always played us strong and I expect this weekend to be a challenge. Our team has had a great preseason and I look forward to battling for a conference championship.”

The Cyclones enter this weekend’s contest having improved their overall record to 17-22 after taking a pair of games from Western Illinois on Wednesday. Senior pitcher Alyssa Ransom tossed 8.2 innings in the doubleheader to record the win in both games.

The Aggies moved to an impressive 26-3 on the season after shutting out Texas State, 5-0, in San Marcos on Wednesday. Freshman left fielder Mandy Gegen went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI while junior pitcher Megan Gibson picked up her 10th win of the season, allowing just three hits.

Amanda Scarborough (12-2) enters the weekend having worked 31.2 innings, in the circle, without allowing an earned run to cross the plate. The junior from Magnolia, Texas went a career-high 46.2 innings without an earned run during her freshman campaign (March 10- April 4, 2005).

A&M leads the all-time series against ISU with a record of 25-5. Last season, the Aggies split the series in Ames, Iowa, losing the first contest 6-14 before shutting out the Cyclones, 7-0, in the second game of the doubleheader.
