Bearkats Fall To Patriots

Dallas -- DBU picked up their 16 victory of the season after they defeated Sam Houston State University, 16-3 on Tuesday night, at Patriot Field. Junior Austin Krum led the Patriots to victory by hitting for the cycle going four for five, with four runs scored, and an RBI. With the victory DBU improved to 16-12, while SHSU fell to 18-10.

Krum led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple to left center field and scored of a sacrifice fly by Sophomore Evan Bigley to start the scoring for the Patriots. Freshman Austin Knight, who was on base because of four pitch walk, scored when Senior Matt Tucker hit an opposite field homerun to bring the score to 3-0 after one inning of play.

The Patriots extended their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the third after Knight reached based on a hit by pitch bringing Senior Garret Baker to the plate, who it a towering homerun over the centerfield wall, giving Baker eight home runs for the season. Tucker, who was on base because of a hit by pitch advanced to third off a double by Junior Nick Santos, scored off a wild pitch and Santos scored off a two out RBI single by Junior Andrew Pirtle.

DBU padded their lead in the bottom half of the fourth when Krum led off with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third off the throwing error by the Bearkats catcher. Krum then scored off an RBI double by Knight, who scored off a single up the middle by Bigley, which brought the score to 9-0 after four.

The Patriots pushed their lead to 11-0 in the bottom of the fifth after Sophomore Trevor Head hit his fifth homerun of the season and Krum hit his fifth of the season with a shot over the right field wall.

Baker led off the bottom of the sixth inning with his second homerun of the game and ninth of the year to give DBU a 12-0 lead.

The Patriots continued to score in the bottom of the seventh inning when they scored two runs off of two hits and a sacrifice fly. Krum led off the seventh with a single and scored off a triple by Knight, who scored the final run of the inning off a sacrifice fly by Baker.

DBU concluded their scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning when they scored two runs off of two doubles, a Bearkat error, and a hit batsman.

The Bearkats scored their three runs in the top of the seventh and ninth inning. SHSU scored one run in the seventh off of three singles and then finished off their scoring in the ninth, when they led off the inning with a double and two run homerun.

Improving to 3-2 on the season with the victory was Senior Randall Taylor, who pitched 5.0 innings, allowed two hits, no runs, and struck out five. Senior Tyler Rowland also had a strong outing by going 2.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits.

Also having strong nights at the plate was Baker, who smashed two homeruns and had four RBI, while Head went two for four, with one run scored, and a RBI.

The Patriots will be in action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Stephen F. Austin at 3:00 in Nacogdoches, Texas.
