WACO -- Playing in front of a raucous crowd in hostile territory, the No. 29-ranked Texas A&M men’s tennis team fell 5-2 to fourth-ranked Baylor but still put up a fight winning the top two singles matches against the Bears Tuesday night at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Junior Jerry Makowski (Bradenton, Fla.) was back in All-American form as he shut out Baylor’s Michael Kokta, 6-0, 6-0, at the top of the singles lineup for the Aggies. Kokta, ranked No. 16 nationally, is the second consecutive ranked opponent to fall victim to Makowski in Big 12 Conference play. He previously defeated No. 33-ranked Bojan Szumanski of Texas Tech in the team’s conference opener on March 30. Makowski climbed to No. 67 in the latest ITA/FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings released on Tuesday. Kokta is the highest ranked opponent that Makowski has beaten this season.
Playing the best tennis on the team, sophomore Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) picked up his career-best 20th victory of the season defeating No. 13-ranked Lars Poerschke with a 10-7 win in the third-set super tiebreaker, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 1-0 (7), at the No. 2 line. Pollock currently holds the team’s longest active winning streak at seven matches with a team-best 14-4 record in dual match play. He compiled a 19-14 record during his Big 12 Freshman of the Year campaign in 2006. Pollock has posted a 4-4 record against ranked opponents this season.
In doubles play, senior Bryan Wooten (Houston, Texas) and freshman Luka Ocvirk (Ljubljana, Slovenia) won 8-5 at the No. 3 position, but it wasn’t enough as senior John Nallon (Garland, Texas) and Brett Joelson (Beaverton, Ore.) lost at the top spot against the No. 18-ranked doubles team of Matija Zgaga and David Galic, 8-5. Pollock and junior Matt Bain (Georgetown, Texas) lost their first doubles match in four outings to Baylor’s Michael Kokta and Dominik Mueller, 8-5, at No. 2.
The Bears improved to 16-2, 2-0 on the season, while the Aggies went to 14-6, 1-1. Despite the loss, A&M still leads 23-12 in the all-time series between the two schools. Last season, the Aggies snapped an eight-match losing skid in the series with a 4-3 victory in College Station.
A&M hosts No. 15-ranked Texas (12-5, 1-0) in what is expected to be a heated battle for the State Farm Lone Star Showdown trophy on Friday, April 6. First serve between the Aggies and Longhorns is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The first 500 fans will receive free food coupons courtesy of Buffalo Wild Wings. Fans who wear maroon to the match will receive free admission.
