AUSTIN -- The woman known as "Coach G" heads for Texas tomorrow after a 15-year run at Duke.
Gail Goestenkors is one of the most successful women's basketball coaches in the country.
But that winning legacy started long before she reached the Duke
It goes back to her days as a scrappy walk-on point guard at
Saginaw Valley State in Michigan.
Texas officials and Goestenkors won't comment on her new job
until she gets formal approval tomorrow by university regents.
Goestenkors would replace Hall of Fame coach Jody Conradt, who
retired last month.
Donna Lopiano, the Texas women's athletic director from
1975-1992, says the Longhorns and the 44-year-old Goestenkors
should make a perfect match.
Her resume includes five Atlantic Coast Conference
championships, four Final Fours and ten years in a row of reaching
the N-C-A-A tournament round of 16.
