COLLEGE STATION -- Texas A&M junior All-American Austin Krajicek (pronounced CRY-check) and junior Jeff Dadamo head to the prestigious ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships to be held on Nov. 5-8 at host Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
This will be the second-straight year in which the Aggies will be represented at the indoor tournament in both the singles and doubles draw. Krajicek, a left-hander from Brandon, Fla., received a singles at-large bid as the No. 30-ranked player in the preseason Campbell/ITA rankings. He has compiled a 3-2 mark in fall competition, which includes matchups against two top 10-ranked players and three top 40 players.
Krajicek and Dadamo, another lefty from Tampa, Fla., also earned a doubles automatic berth as the Wilson/ITA Texas Regional doubles champions. The Aggie tandem has put together an undefeated 5-0 doubles record this fall and will face some of the top duos in the country. The field includes top-seeded and NCAA runner-ups J.P. Smith and Davey Sandgren of Tennessee who competed at the 2009 NCAA Tennis Championships hosted by Texas A&M this past May in College Station.
“Obviously, this is a farely quick turnaround for Austin and Jeff, but they’ve had some time to rest and get used to playing indoors this week,” said Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton who visits the historic New England area for the first time since his pro career on the ATP Tour. “We have been really focusing on our doubles work and getting Austin ready for singles. Both of them feel good and are rejuvenated. Last year, we weren’t very successful at indoors, but I’m hoping this second time around for Austin and this first time for Jeff, we will play well and have some good results.”
The ITA Indoor Championships features a 32-player singles field and a 16-team doubles field for men and women including: (1) champions from Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country during the month of October, (2) the ITA National Small College champions, (3) the winners of the D’Novo/ITA Men’s All-American Tennis Championships and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, and (4) at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee.
Play begins on Thursday, Nov. 5 with the first round of doubles and the first round of singles beginning at 8 a.m. (CT) and concludes on Sunday, Nov. 8 with the championship matches. Consolation play starts on Friday for teams and players eliminated in the first round.
Past champions and finalists include current professional players Benjamin Becker (Baylor), James Blake (Harvard), Bob and Mike Bryan (Stanford), John Isner (Georgia) and Kevin Kim (UCLA) as well as Grand Slam finalists Todd Martin (Northwestern) and MaliVai Washington (Michigan).
