Turgeon Accepts A&M's Coaching Offer

COLLEGE STATION -- Texas A&M has scheduled a 3 p.m. press conference Tuesday to name Mark Turgeon as the head coach of the Texas Aggie men's basketball program.

Turgeon will address the media in a press conference at Reed Arena. Fans will be able to watch that press conference courtesy of 12th Man TV on the main floor of Reed Arena.

The press conference will also be broadcast live on KBTX News 3.

Turgeon led Wichita State to the Sweet 16 two seasons ago after winning the Missouri Valley Conference.

This year, the Shockers were 9-0 at the start of their season, which tied the best start in school history, and ranked 8th in the country. They had wins over LSU and Syracuse as part of that run, but stumbled in conference play and wound up 17-14.

In seven seasons in Wichita, Turgeon has guided the Shocks to four consecutive postseason appearances, the program's most successful run since the 1960s. He is the only coach in school history to better his win total from the previous year for a period of five consecutive seasons.

The former Kansas Jayhawk team captain will leave his home state to replace Billy Gillispie and will get a chance to face his alma mater next season when the Aggies host Kansas at Reed Arena.

The Turgeons arrived in College Station Monday afternoon and took a 30-minute tour of Reed Arena following lunch at the Zone Club.

Texas A&M Director of Athletics Bill Byrne said after the tour of Reed that he "thought the recruiting trip went well."

There are online reports that claim that Turgeon will sign a five-year deal, with an automatic three-year rollover, giving him an eight-year deal overall.

Turgeon will reportedly earn $1.2 million per year, which is $550,000 less than what Billy Gillispie was set to receive before he bolted to coach the Wildcats in the Bluegrass State.
