FRISCO -- Sam Houston State's Irina Sotnikova has been voted
Aeropostale Players of the Week in Southland Conference women's tennis.

The sophomore from Riga, Latvia, went undefeated at the number one position in both singles and doubles during the week of April 1-7. She ended the 13-match winning streak of Emilija Arnaudovskia of Southeastern Louisiana with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 victory last week. She also defeated Celine Stenger of Nicholls State 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) to go 2-0 in singles.

She teamed with Lata Assudani for victories at No. 1 doubles over both
Nicholls and SLU. The victory against the Lions ended a six-match winning streak for Knavs and Kovac.

Sotnikova stands 12-3 in both singles and doubles at number one in dual
match play this season. She has led Sam Houston to an 8-2 Southland record, the Bearkats' best league mark in 20 years in the SLC.

Sam Houston State will complete its 2007 regular season schedule Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Bearkats play host to Stephen F. Austin State at the McAdams Tennis Complex. A victory over SFA combined with a loss by UTA at Southeastern Louisiana will make Sam Houston the runner-up in the 2007 regular season Southland standings and the number two seed at the SLC post-season tournament in San Antonio next week.
