Aggie Softball Makes Quick Work Of A&M CC

COLLEGE STATION -- Amanda Scarborough was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and earned the win in the circle as the 5th-ranked Texas A&M softball team (32-6) beat the A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (8-28) 9-0 in five innings on Wednesday night at the Aggie Softball Complex.

“It’s nice that our team came out here and took care of business,” A&M head coach Jo Evans said. “I was very disappointed in that we didn’t go seven innings, just in terms of wanting to give Emily Shadow and Lisa Gorzycki more opportunities to pitch, so that those kids can stay sharp. I really liked the business-like approach we had; we came out and did a nice job.”

The Aggies plated two runs in the first with a lead-off double by Sharonda McDonald. Freshman Macie Morrow hit a fielder’s choice to move McDonald to third. Scarborough registered her first hit, a single to right-centerfield, to score McDonald. Jamie Hinshaw would bring Morrow home on a soft grounder to second base.

A&M would add four more runs in the second off four singles and a triple. Designated player Alex Reynolds got the hitting started with a single followed-up by singles from Beverly Rowan and Bailey Schroeder. Gibson rounded out the base hits before Scarborough hit her third triple of the season.

The Aggies brought the run rule into effect, scoring three more runs in the fourth inning. All of the runs were unearned as the Islanders had a fielding error by Stephanie Estrada and a throwing error by Andrea Simancas. Scoring for A&M was Schroeder, McDonald and Holly Ridley, who replaced Morrow at shortstop.

Three Aggie pitchers logged time in the circle. Scarborough and Gibson each threw two innings with freshman Emily Shadow finishing off the fifth. A&M-CC managed a hit off Scarborough and Gibson. Scarborough struck out three while Gibson K’d two, she also allowed a walk. Shadow posted zeros. None of the three Islander base runners reached scoring position.

Gibson finished the night 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs. McDonald was 1-for-3 and scored three of the Aggies’ nine runs.

The Aggies will travel to Lawrence, Kan. this weekend to continue Big 12 action against the Jayhawks. First pitch of Saturday’s game is set for 2 p.m.
