Van Chancellor To Become Women's Head Coach At LSU

BATON ROUGE, LA -- Former Olympic and Houston Comets coach Van Chancellor today has been named women's basketball coach at LSU.

Chancellor says he'll keep the assistant coaching staff left
behind when Pokey Chatman abruptly resigned last month.

Chancellor singled out for mention assistant coach Bob Starkey,
who took over the team and guided L-S-U to its fourth consecutive
Final Four appearance after Chatman left.

Chancellor was women's coach at Mississippi from 1978-97 before
leading the W-N-B-A Comets to four straight championships from 1997
through the 2000 season.

He coached the 2004 U-S gold medal team and has a 38-and-0
record in international competition.

Chatman resigned March seventh amid allegations of inappropriate
conduct with a former L-S-U player when that player was on the
women's team.
