BRYAN -- This morning Bob Meyer the Head of Allen Academy Schools along with Athletic Director Micah Catterson announced the hiring of Eddie Luna as the Rams Head Football Coach.
The pair also announced that Nathan Rider would stay on as a varsity assistant. Meyer said that staffing for additional assistant coaches and the Middle School football program will begin immediately.
Coach Luna graduated from Bryan Stephen F. Austin in 1967 and was a member of the last class to graduate from Allen Academy Junior College in 1970. Coach Luna graduated from Texas A&M University in 1973 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Health and Physical Education. He has coached for thirty-three years. Coach Luna began his coaching career with Bryan Independent School District where he coached seventh grade football at Anson Jones School for five years. He then coached at Stephen F. Austin School for five years where his team was undefeated during the 1981-1982 school year. Coach Luna began coaching at St. Joseph’s School in Bryan, Texas during the 1985-1986 school year. He worked with the middle school and high school football teams for twelve years. During this time, his team celebrated three undefeated seasons. Next, Coach Luna worked with the ninth grade football team for two years at Lamar for Bryan Independent School District. Beginning in the 1999-2000 school year, Coach Luna coached both Junior High and was the Head Coach for six man football at St. Joseph’s School. Coach Luna then coached at Allen Academy as an assistant coach during the 2004-2005 school year. For the past two years, Coach Luna was the Assistant High School football coach at St. Joseph’s School. Coach Luna and his wife Charlene have been happily married for 31 years. They have three children: Bo (age 26), Matt (age 24) and Breanne (age 22). In his free time, he enjoys coaching and working with the youth in the community. He feels that his greatest coaching challenge is empowering the “underdog.”
Nathan will continue his work on the Allen Academy football staff. Coach Rider graduated from Mineola High School in 1997 before moving on to play college football for Tarleton State University. While at Tarleton, he helped his team win a Conference Championship and go to the final sixteen of the NCAA Division II Playoffs in 2001. He also received Academic All-conference honors for the same year. After Graduating in 2001, he continued his education at Texas A& M University where in 2004 he received a Masters in Education with an emphasis on Outdoor Education. He began working at Allen Academy in 2002 as the Boarding Supervisor. In 2003, he began coaching the defensive and offensive lineman for the Rams. In 2004, he became the Defensive Coordinator and coached the Linebackers and Tight Ends. In 2005, Nathan continued as the defensive coordinator while coaching a variety of positions along the way. Nathan currently serves as a member of the faculty at Allen Academy and is the Student Activities Coordinator for the Middle and Upper School. Coach Rider and his wife Lisa have be married for seven years and have two beautiful children Gavin (age 4) and Elijah (age 2).
