ALVIN -- The Bryan Viking Gymnastics Team won the Region II Championship qualifying them to the State Championships to be held May 3-5 in San Angelo. Bryan set season records in both Compulsory competition and in Optional competition. The two day total is the fourth highest team score in the history of the program. Roundrock HS and Kingwood HS finished second and third, respectively in the field of seven.
Individually, Isaac Rodriguez advanced his All-Around success as District Champion to Regional Champ. He did so winning Still Rings, Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar. Sr. Eddie Vargas (competing sick) won the Floor Exercise and Soph. Alex Reyes won the Pommel Horse. Vargas also had a third place on Parallel Bars and Reyes posted a third place total on Still Rings.
Matthew Kelly added tremendous support to the team’s effort placing second on Floor and Horizontal Bar; third on Pommel Horse; and fifth on Rings. He was a closed second in the All-Around pressing Rodriguez to the last event. “The everyday competitive attitudes these two have towards each other is adding a lot of strength to this team,” explained Coach Fletcher.
Those two Juniors combined with the five Seniors and their leadership is starting to show ‘State title’ potential. Srs. Victor Benavides was third on Vault and fourth on Horizontal Bar while classmate Josh Stevens was fifth on Horizontal. Sr. Angel Perez provided valuable team points on Floor (10th) and good starting scores on Vault. Soph. Stefan Quartemont did an excellent job adding depth to Pommel Horse, Still Rings (8th) and Horizontal Bar events. Chris Martinez, team’s most experienced member, missed the competition with an injured wrist.
Other Regional Champions are Hurst LD Bell, Allen HS north of Dallas and most surely Odessa Permian. Permian leads their Regional meet after the first day of competition. Bryan is 1-1 against Bell for the season and has not beaten Mojo since the 2000 State Meet when Bryan won their last (of four) State Championships.
