ALVIN -- Bryan High School Girls gymnastics team finished 3rd at the Regional Gymnastics Championships in Alvin on Wed 4/11 Thur4/12. Regional meet is based upon a 2 day competition by combining compulsory competition scores to Optional competition scores.Top three teams at Regionals advance to the State meet. Roundrock placed 1st 226.2 Kingwood 2nd-225.575 Bryan 3rd-220.825

Bryan girls team has not qualified to the State meet as a team since 2004.

In a 9 team competition; we were hoping to be able to place in the top 3; but we knew it was going to be difficult. The girls had a great first day and were in 3rd place after the compulsories. 2nd-5th place after the first day of competition was very close; (within a couple tenths).
Bryan girls stayed strong on the 2nd day and were able to hold on to the 3rd place to beat out Friendswood and A&M Consol.

" I was pretty impressed that the girls were able to pull off the challenge of making it to that 3rd place spot." It all came down to our Optional routines.

The team was focused and knew what needed to be done. There were a few misses on the beam; but we were able to finish the meet with very strong Vaults.

Individually; Senior Alyssa Zawieja was 2 time defending Regional All-Around champion. She also placed first on Vault, Bars and Floor and placed 3rd on Beam.

Other girls placing in the top 10 were: Senior Daniela Hart placing 10th All-Around and Fr. Katelyn Lowe placing 8th Vault.

This will be Alyssa Zawieja's 4th trip to the State meet. Each year inching closer and closer to a State title on any of the 5 events. The past 2 years she has placed 2nd on the Vault and is hoping again that this will be the year that she can earn a State Vaulting title. She was 4th last year in the All-Around and has hopes that it will be a top 3 this year.

The girls team will be traveling to San Angelo for the State Championships on May 3-5.
