OKLAHOMA CITY, OK -- The No. 32 Oklahoma men’s tennis team picked up its first Big 12 win over No. 27 Texas A&M (6-1) Friday.
The Sooners came out strong winning two of three doubles matches, both in tie-breakers.
Oklahoma was led at the No. 1 spot by Federico Chavarria and Andrei Daescu. The tandem took an early 5-2 lead before Jerry Makowski and Brett Joelson of Texas A&M began to rally back. The match came to eight all before the Sooner duo claimed the victory (8-6) in a tie-breaker.
At the No. 2 spot the Oklahoma pair of Rob Mackenzie and Vaclav Kucera defeated Matt Bain and Conor Pollock 9-8 (2).
This was the first time that both the No. 1 and No.2 OU tandems had paired up in competition.
Due to a lack of courts, the teams were only able to play three matches at a time. In the first round of singles play, the Sooners swept the competition increasing their lead 4-1.
At No. 2 for Oklahoma, senior Marek Velicka downed Pollock in straight sets. Velicka won the first set in a tie-breaker 7-4 before taking the second set 6-4.
“I am incredibly satisfied with the way I played and the win,” Velicka said. “I have to thank the fans for creating such a great atmosphere. It really helped me keep my play at a high level.”
No. 103 freshman Andrei Daescu squared off against Luka Ocvirk at the No. 3 slot. After dropping the first set 3-6, Daescu came back to take the match 6-4, 6-3.
The most intense match of the day came in a three and a half hour battle at the No.1 spot. Oklahoma’s No. 58 ranked freshman Vavlav Kucera went head to head with Texas A&M’s No. 67 Jerry Makowski.
Kucera lost the first set 6-8 in a tie breaker, before taking the second set 6-4. Kucera came out big in the third set defeating Makowski 6-2 to claim the point for Oklahoma.
“He is a very solid player, so it was a good win,” Kucera said. “I was so close to winning the first set, so after that I just fought hard, I didn’t do anything special.”
The win over the Aggies improves the Sooner’s overall record to 17-4 and 1-1 in Big 12 play. The last time Oklahoma beat Texas A&M was the 1997 season. The win puts Coach Lockwood (299-183) just one victory shy of his 300th career win.
“I am so proud of the players. It was a great win, they fought hard from the first point to the last and they had great attitudes for close to six hours," Coach Lockwood said. "I know this will give us great confidence going up against Texas Sunday.”
The match was moved originally scheduled to be played at the Headington Family Tennis Center, but moved to indoor courts at Willow Creek Golf and Country Club in Oklahoma City due to weather.
OU will return to action Sunday, April 15 to take on rival Texas. The No. 13 Longhorns remain undefeated in Big 12 play. Oklahoma and Texas will square off at noon at the Headington Family Tennis Center. Live scoring of the match will be available at SoonerSports.com in addition to a recap at the end of play.
