THIBODAUX, La. – The Colonels and Bearkats went to extra innings in the first game tied at zero, and Nicholls prevailed in the bottom of 12th on a single to left field by junior Rachel Pugh that scored junior Kat Harrell for the 1-0 victory.
The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to outfield light malfunctions. The series will resume tomorrow at 11 a.m. followed by the second duel at 1 p.m.
“This was just a great win for the team. I am very proud of my team, and how they battled through adversity today,” said head coach Jenny Parsons. “Jessica (Barksdale) really pitched a great game, and stepped it up for us.”
Both the Colonels’ junior Jessica Barksdale and the Bearkats’ Morgon Mikulin tossed all 12 innings as Barksdale recorded her fourth win of the year to improve to 4-4. Barksdale, the River Ridge, La. native, only allowed two hits in 12 innings, and fanned six in the process to pick up her second win of the week.
The Colonels (22-18, 11-7) and the Bearkats (21-19, 10-6) both were victimized at the plate by the strong winds that at times topped 30 mph. The windy conditions neutralized both squads by taking the long ball away as the wind blew in from centerfield.
Harrell, who is second in the nation in batting average, had a game best 2-for-5 outing at the plate and scored the only run of the contest.
Nicholls and Sam Houston State will turn around and play two games tomorrow to round out the series. Game times for Sunday are set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
