Ag Men's Tennis Falls To Cowboys

STILLWATER, Okla.- In a down-to-the-wire thriller, the No. 28-ranked Texas A&M men’s tennis team came up short at No. 14 Oklahoma State, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the DuBois Tennis Center.

The Aggies started off the dual match winning the doubles point behind the superior play of senior Bryan Wooten (Houston, Texas) and freshman Luka Ocvirk (Ljubljana, Slovenia) who claimed their fourth consecutive win with an 8-4 victory of Oklahoma State’s Ivan Puchkarov and Dmytro Petrov at No. 3. In the running for a Big 12 title by position, the duo boasts a conference-and team-leading 4-0 record at No. 3 doubles.

Junior Matt Bain (Georgetown, Texas) and sophomore Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) sealed the doubles point for A&M with an 8-6 win over OSU’s Artsem Burmistrau and Nathan Byrnes at the No. 2 position. Bain and Pollock are 13-6 in dual match play.

In singles action, the Cowboys (15-1, 3-0) captured four of the six singles matches to extend their win streak to 12. At the top of the OSU lineup, No. 32-ranked Oleksander Nedovyesov defeated junior All-American Jerry Makowski (Bradenton, Fla.), 6-4, 6-1, while Luka Ocvirk won his first match in seven outings after winning a three-set decision over OSU’s Daniel Byrnes, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3. He was one of three A&M players to battle the Cowboys in three sets.

Sophomore Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) fell 7-5 in his third set to No. 29-ranked Ivan Puchkarov who clinched the match for the Cowboys. Pollock rebounded from a 4-6 first-set loss to Puchkarov with a convincing 6-2 win in the second set. Senior Brett Joelson (Beaverton, Ore.) also fell in a lengthy three-setter versus OSU’s Burmistrau, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 5.

Along with Ocvirk, senior John Nallon (Garland, Texas) found success in singles as he claimed a straight-set victory over OSU’s Nathan Byrnes, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 6. Nallon improved to 19-12 overall and12-3 in dual match play.

The Aggies (14-9, 1-4) host No. 67 Nebraska (7-9, 1-3) in the team’s regular season finale on Friday, April 20 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Fans are encouraged to attend the men’s final home match of the season as seniors Bryan Wooten, Brett Joelson and John Nallon are honored prior to the Senior Day match. First serve between the Aggies and Huskers is set for 6 p.m.
