Bearkat Men In 5th Place Tie After Round One Of SLC Tournament

Kerrville -- Led by Fergal Rafferty, who stands tied for 18th in the
individual standings, the Sam Houston State men's golf team is tied for
fifth place with Texas State-San Marcos after the first round of the 54-hole Southland Conference championships Monday.

Defending Southland Conference champion and nationally-ranked Lamar leads the tournament with a four-under par team total of 284. Texas-San Antonio and Southeastern Louisiana are tied for second at 290, followed by Texas-Arlington 305, Sam Houston and Texas State-San Marcos 309, Stephen F. Austin 315, McNeese State 322, Central Arkansas 323, and Nicholls State 329.

Casey Clendenon of Lamar, Thomas Kearney of UTSA, and Matt Carvell of Southeastern Louisiana are tied for individual leadership, each with two-under scores of 70.

For Sam Houston State, Rafferty stands 18th with a first round 76, Robert Gwin is 20th at 77, Brandon Frankhouser and Scooter Jefferson both 24th at 78, and Beau Willis 36th with an 81.

The event, the 44th annual men's golf championship for the Southland
Conference, is being held on the par 72, 7,103-yard layout at Comanche Trace Golf Club.

The Lamar Cardinals are favored to make it two SLC titles in a row, five in the last seven years and an all-time best 21 team titles as the 2007
Southland Conference Men's Golf Championship gets under way Monday, April 16.

The nationally ranked Lamar Cardinals enter the tournament with the
Southland's best scoring average during regular-season play. They have compiled a 286.36 stroke average during 33 rounds and have won five of 11 tournaments participated in this year. In addition, the Cardinals have posted two seconds and two fifths with their worst showing being a tie for seventh in 2006-07. Lamar is ranked eighth in the latest Golfstat national rankings behind Stanford , Georgia , Alabama , USC, UCLA, UNLV and Oklahoma State . Lamar is tied with Stanford and Louisville with the most tournament wins in 2006-07.

Sam Houston State has won five regular season tournaments this year with victories coming at the SFA, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette, Rice, and UTSA intercollegiate events. A Sam Houston State men's golf team has not won five tournament titles in one season since 1988. Sam Houston State won the Southland Conference men's golf championship in 1990 and 1994. The Bearkats finished third in 1999 and 2000 but have not placed higher than sixth since.
