COLLEGE STATION -- A potential share of the Big 12 Conference title will be on the line when Texas A&M (17-4, 7-1) and Texas (10-8, 7-1) clash Tuesday in the next round of the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. First serve is at 5:30 p.m. at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Both teams are 7-1 and tied for second in league play. Baylor, which handed each team its only conference loss, leads the conference with a 9-1 mark with only a match against last-place Iowa State remaining.
“Obviously there is a lot riding on this match,” A&M coach Bobby Kleinecke said. “As long as both teams take care of business in their remaining matches, this match is going to be for a share of the conference title with Baylor.”
The teams conclude the regular season this weekend. A&M is at Kansas State (5-13, 3-6) and Kansas (4-14, 2-7), Saturday and Sunday, respectively, while Texas finishes at Missouri (8-10, 3-7) and Kansas State.
Texas leads the all-time series, 35-6 since 1980, but the teams are tied at 3-3 in Big 12 regular-season matches since 2001. Last year, A&M defeated the Longhorns, 6-1, in the regular-season match in College Station, but Texas eliminated the Aggies, 4-2, in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship in Waco.
A&M’s last victory in Austin was a 4-3 decision in 2003. The win help catapult the Aggies to their only Big 12 regular-season championship, which they shared with Baylor.
”This match is going to be a battle,” Kleinecke said. “Forget the rankings. Forget everything. You don’t even need that kind of stuff riding on it when it is A&M and Texas. Both teams will be out there ready to play their best, and the best team is going to win.”
A&M is coming off two wins over the weekend, defeating Texas Tech, 7-0, and No. 67 Oklahoma State, 5-2, both in College Station.
A&M seniors Anna Lubinsky, Sarah Foster and Nicki Mechem, who play No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively, lead the Aggies with 7-1 records in Big 12 matches. Junior Tiffany Clifford is 6-1 in conference play, typically competing at the No. 6 line.
The Aggies boast two doubles teams that are undefeated in the Big 12. Clifford and Foster are 8-0 at the No. 1 line and riding an eight-match winning streak. Mechem and Lubinsky A&M’s top two all-time leaders in career singles and doubles victories, are 8-0 at the No. 2 line and riding a six-match winning streak.
A&M has won the doubles point in 18 of 21 matches and is 17-1 when winning the point.
Texas, coming off a 6-1 victory against Oklahoma State on Saturday, is led by a pair of freshmen. Vanja Corovic is 5-1 at No. 1 singles, and Stephanie Davison plays No. 2 singles, where she is 2-0.
Senior Ristine Olsen Is 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
