COLLEGE STATION -- Amanda Scarborough pitched a one-hit shutout and went 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored to pace the 5th-ranked Texas A&M softball team to a doubleheader sweep (2-1, 4-0) of Oklahoma State in front of 907 fans on Wednesday night at the Aggie Softball Complex.
With the wins the Aggies improve to 36-6, 9-3 in conference play, while the loss drops the Cowgirls to 24-26, 2-9 in Big 12.
“I am very pleased with the way our kids showed up and didn’t lose focus,” A&M head coach Jo Evans said. “We didn’t often get our lead off batters on tonight, but we did a lot with two outs and found ways to score runs. Scarborough and (Megan) Gibson managed to help us out quite a bit today. I thought our kids looked good, we made plays and our pitchers did a great job out there on the mound.”
Alex Reynolds, the Big 12 Player of the Week, hit her second home run in as many games in the bottom of the fifth to give the Aggies the 2-1 victory in the first game. The towering shot cleared straightaway centerfield.
OSU’s only run of the night came in the fourth inning of game one when Courtney Totte reached on one of two singles she’d hit on the day. Two more singles, by Kim Kaye and Emily Blackburn would bring Totte around to score.
The Aggies countered with a run of their own in the fourth off a one-out single by Gibson who would move to second on a bobbled ball in the outfield. Scarborough lined her ninth double of the season to bring Gibson home.
Gibson (15-2) earned the win, working all seven allowing just one run on six hits. She struck out seven OSU batters without allowing a free pass.
In the nightcap, Scarborough (18-4) gave up a hit to start the game before retiring the next 15 batters. A throwing error by Macie Morrow in the sixth would be the only other Cowgirl base-runner the Aggies would allow. In seven innings of work, Scarborough struck out six batters en route to her fifth shutout of the season.
A Gibson two-out first inning walk, her 42nd of the season, would set up Scarborough for her second double and second RBI of the night. Jamie Hinshaw lined a shot into leftfield to bring Scarborough around for A&M’s second run of the inning.
The Aggies would take the 2-0 lead into the third where Scarborough would give A&M a little insurance by belting her sixth home run of the year, a solo shot over the left-centerfield wall.
Reynolds would reach base on a lead-off walk in the sixth, Bailey Schroeder came in to pinch-run and moved to second on a pitch in the dirt by Chelsey Barclay. Sharonda McDonald laid down a two-out bunt single to score Schroeder.
Gibson ended the evening 2-for-5 with a walk and two runs scored.
Jessica Hoppock (12-13) was charged with the loss in the first game. She worked five innings allowing two runs on three hits and a walk.
Anna Whiddon (10-9) got the loss for OSU in the second game after giving up three runs on four hits in four innings of work. She allowed Aggie batters four free passes.
The softball team will take to the road this weekend as it travels to Columbia, Mo. to face the Missouri Tigers in a two game series. The first game is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. at University Field.
