The fight for a spot in the six-team Southland Conference post season
softball tournament to be hosted May 10-12 in Huntsville contines this
weekend as two of the league's top softball squads meet at the Bearkat
Sam Houston State (25-19, SLC 12-6) plays host to Texas State-San Marcos (24-19, SLC 13-8) in a crucial three-game series beginning with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday. The third contest of the series will be Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Bearkats currently stand in second place in the standings while the
Bobcats are in fourth.
Sam Houston State has won 11 of their last 13 games including 9-1 and 11-1 non-conference victories over Prairie View A&M Wednesday night.
Texas State-San Marcos is coming into Huntsville on the heals of one of the biggest softball victories ever for the Bobcats.
A pair of home runs in the top of the fifth inning provided enough offense behind a one-hit performance by Ragan Blake as the Bobcats upset No. 19 Texas 3-0 in Austin on Wednesday.
The win marked Texas State-San Marcos's first over a ranked team this
season, and the Bobcats have now won six of their last seven games.
The shutout by Blake was her SLC-leading eighth and lowered her ERA to another SLC best at 1.58.
Sam Houston State also had a sterling pitching performance Wednesday as Brandi Crnkovic threw the 14th no-hitter in Bearkat softball history, striking out 13 Panther batters in the 9-1 victory over Prairie View.
Four Bearkats come into the Texas State-San Marcos series hitting over .300. Senior Stephanie Mosley owns a .363 batting average with six doubles, a home run, and 20 RBIs.
Casie Everitt is hitting .359 with nine doubles, a triple, and six home
runs. Also hot at the plate are Mandy Collier (.347) and Sarah Parich
The series with the Bobcats is the first of four remaining Southland series for Sam Houston before hosting the Southland tournament. SHSU also must face sixth-place Stephen F. Austin, third place Texas-San Antonio before wrapping up the regular season with eighth place Northwestern State.
