LAKE CHARLES, LA -Sam Houston State swept its Southland Conference series with McNeese State here Sunday with a 7-5 victory.
The Bearkats, who had beaten the Cowboys on Friday and Saturday, led all the way even though McNeese got to within one run on two occasions and recorded their 27th victory against 15 setbacks. Sam Houston also went to 11-7 in league play.
McNeese, which bowed for the fourth straight time, dropped to 13-27 overall and to 9-8 in league play.
Tim Gray hurled the first five innings to gain the win for Sam Houston but did need late inning help from Luke Prihoda. Gray, now 4-3 on the season, pitched five innings of four hit, one run ball and gave way to Stephen Price who gave up two hits and two runs in but two-thirds of an inning.
Prihoda came on to pitch the final 3.1 innings, giving up three hits and two runs but recorded his 14th save of the season, tying the Southland
Conference record for most saves in one season set by Alex Velazquez of Nicholls State in 2000 and Jason Watkins of Texas-Arlington in 1992.
Cowboy starter Sam English was the losing pitcher, dropping his record to 1-4.
Sam Houston had 11 hits in the game, two of those home runs by Todd Sebek and Bobby Verbick. Both players drove in two runs each for the Bearkats.
Charlie Kingrey belted his 13th home run for the Cowboys and also hit a
double while Brad Becker, Thomas Zabasky and Shon Landry had two hits each and Landry drove in three runs, two scoring on his first home run of the season.
Cowboy catcher Joe Hulett went hitless in five trips to the plate and had his 24 game hitting streak snapped.
