LAWRENCE, Kan.- The Texas A&M women’s tennis team concluded the regular season with a 7-0 shutout against Kansas today at the First Serve Tennis Center indoor courts.

With the win, the 21st-ranked Aggies improve to 19-5 overall and wrap up the No. 3 seed at the Big 12 Championships, which begin Thursday at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo. A&M has earned a first-round bye and will play Friday at 6 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.

“I felt like we had two matches (Kansas State on Saturday and Kansas) that were maintenance matches in a way -- ones that we should win,” A&M coach Bobby Kleinecke said. “Sometimes those are dangerous situations. I thought the girls did a great job preparing themselves and coming out and fighting hard. Today’s match, even though it was 7-0, it was not an easy match. Kansas played very well and really tested us quite a bit.”

In doubles action, the Aggie duo of Anna Blagodarova and Michelle Sammons broke serve to take a 2-1 lead and never trailed again en route to an 8-4 victory over Stephanie Smith and Yuliana Svistun at the No. 3 line.

Tiffany Clifford and Sarah Foster clinched the doubles point for the Aggies, defeating Elizaveta Avdeeva and Edina Horvath, 8-4, at the No. 1 line.

Kunigunda Dorn and Lauren Hommell prevented the sweep, overcoming a 7-5 deficit to upset 39th-ranked Anna Lubinsky and Nicki Mechem at the No. 2 position. It marked the Aggie duo’s only loss in Big 12 matches.

Blagodarova gave the Aggies a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Dorn at the No. 3 singles line. Lubinsky followed with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Avdeeva at No. 1, and Elze Potgieter notched the match-clinching point, holding off Horvath, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 at the No. 2 line.

Mechem rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Hommell at No. 4, and Clifford put the Aggies ahead, 6-0, with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Svistun at No. 5.

Marisa Druss improved to 9-0 in dual matches and preserved the shutout, holding off two match points in the super tiebreaker to defeat Smith, 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (9).

Kansas suffers its eighth consecutive loss and falls to 4-16 overall, 2-9 in the Big 12.
