FRISCO -- After Sam Houston State to a Southland series victory over fourth place Texas State-San Marcos, freshman Morgan Mikulin was voted this week's Aerpostale Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week.
The honor was the first for the Huntsville product. She is the first Bearkat to win the honor this season and the first to win it since Shalayne Blythe on April 25, 2005.
Mikulin had a hand in both victories as Sam Houston defeated Texas State-San Marcos twice. She allowed only three hits in 5-2 victory Saturday, with a complete game shutout, striking out seven . Both of the runs in the game were unearned .
In game two against the Bobcats, she picked up fourth save of season . She entered game with bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning, struck out first batter she faced, then got next batter to ground out . She faced seven more batters to preserve the victory .
In a midweek game against Prairie View, she went seven innings, allowing four hits and one run, striking out four.
On the season, Mikulin is 13-10, with a 2.32 ERA, along with a SLC best four saves. She has also tossed 17 complete games on the season and stands No. 6 in ERA and tied for third in wins.
Sam Houston State returns to action Tuesday night when the Bearkats play host to Stephen F. Austin in a mid-week Southland Conference series. Sam Houston State stands second in the Southland softball standings with a 14-7 league mark, ranking behind only Texas-Arlington who holds first place with a 16-5 mark.
SFA enters the series with a 12-12 league mark, good enough for eighth place.
Tuesday's 6:30 p.m. single game is "25 cent Hot Dog Night" at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
The two teams will meet in a doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. This weekend, Sam Houston State travels to meet Texas-San Antonio on Saturday and Sunday in the Alamo City.
