COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Brandon Hicks went 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored and Clayton Ehlert threw five-scoreless innings Wednesday night to lead No. 16 Texas A&M past Stephen F. Austin, 6-0, at Olsen Field.
Ehlert (1-0) earned his first collegiate win and allowed just three hits and fanned three. Just one SFA runner made it to second base in the first five innings of the game.
Aggie relievers Matt Ueckert, Kiel Renfro, and Gary Campfield combined to toss four scoreless innings and allow just one hit. It was the second shutout of the year for the A&M pitching staff.
“SFA has a good team and they ran some good pitchers out there at us,” A&M head coach Rob Childress said. “We pitched and played defense tonight and played a pretty clean game. We did enough offensively to win the game.”
With the win, the Aggies improved to 33-10, while the Lumberjacks dropped to 23-20.
Texas A&M returns to Big 12 Conference play Friday when they play the series opener against Baylor in Waco. The series then shifts to Olsen Field for games two and three.
After getting just two hits – both by Hicks - in the first three innings, A&M finally got to SFA starter David Miller in the fourth. Luke Anders doubled and with two outs Josh Stinson delivered an RBI single to left. Miller was lifted in favor of Erik Gergensen, who hit two consecutive hitters and walked Parker Dalton to force in a run. Hicks then belted a two-RBI single to left to plate two runs and Ben Feltner legged out a bunt single to score another and make the score 5-0.
The Aggies added a run in the sixth to increase their lead to 6-0. Hicks singled, stole second, moved to third on a failed pick-off attempt and scored on a groundout by Blake Stouffer.
Miller (1-1) lasted 3 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He fanned seven and walked one.
