FRISCO -- After leading the Sam Houston State men's golf team to fourth place at the 2007 Southland championship tournament, the Bearkats' highest league finish since 2001, Robert Gwin and Beau Willis have been honored by selection to the All-Southland Conference squad.
Gwin, a senior from Houston, was named second team All-Southland. Willis, a freshman from Weatherford, was honored as Southland Conference "Freshman of the Year" and was an All-SLC honorable mention selection.
Gwin placed 10th in the Southland Conference tournament individual
standings. He has earned the SHSU golf team's Most Valuable Player award for each of the past three years. Gwin led the Bearkats in stroke average with a 73.0 mean this year. He was the individual medalist winner at the UTSA fall tournament as finished as runner-up in two other regular season events during the 2006-07 season.
Willis ranked second on the Bearkat squad in stroke average with a 73.7 mark this year. His top performance was fifth place at the UTSA tournament. He placed 21st at the Southland Conference Championship tournament, the highest finish by any league freshman in this year's event.
Southland Conference champion Lamar University received four of the five spots on the All-Southland first team. Dawie Van Der Walt of Lamar was the league's "Men's Golfer of the Year."
