SAN ANTONIO -- Amanda Collier and Lauren Burns hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning to power Sam Houston to a 6-2 victory in the first game of the doubleheader, then Tanya Hooser blasted a three-run home run as the Bearkats won 4-0 in the nightcap as the softball team took a doubleheader from the Roadrunners Saturday.
Collier's home run was a grand slam. The victories up Sam Houston State's season record to 32-20 and keep the Bearkats in the race for the SLC regular season title with a 19-7 league mark. SHSU trails first place Texas-Arlington by one-half game.
Morgan Mikilin was the winning pitcher in the first game and Brani Crnkovic was the winner in the second. Mikulin (16-10) spread seven hits over seven innings, striking out two. Crnkovic (15-9) tossed a two-hitter, striking out six batters.
Texas-San Antonio jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Cindy
Rogers single. But Collier's grand slam and Burns solo shot put Sam Houston ahead and the Kats never trailed the rest of the day. Stephanie Mosley added an RBI single, scoring Amy Brown who singled.
Amanda Lindsey accounted for the Bearkats' fourth run in the nightcap with an RBI single. The two teams will meet in the third game of the series Sunday at 12 noon.
