COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Pitchers David Newmann and Kyle Thebeau made a four-run second hold on Saturday as No. 16 Texas A&M defeated Baylor, 5-3, at Olsen Field.
Newmann (7-1) lasted 7 1/3, allowing three runs on five hits, while walking three and striking out seven. Thebeau retired all five men he faced to earn his fifth save of the year.
“I thought today was a well played game,” A&M head coach Rob Childress said. “This is the first time we are 2-0 in a Big 12 series this year and we have a chance to sweep at home. We really need to take advantage of it tomorrow.”
With the win, the Aggies improved to 35-10 overall and to 11-8 in Big 12 play. Baylor dropped to 24-21 and 7-13. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Sunday’s series finale at Olsen Field.
The Aggies took the early lead with four runs in the bottom of the second off Baylor starting pitcher Randall Linebaugh. Craig Stinson hit his sixth home run of the year to start the inning and Blake Stouffer delivered a bases-loaded single to score two runs. Stouffer intentionally got caught in a rundown between first and second, allowing Ben Feltner to score from third.
Matt Czimskey belted a two-out, three-run homer over the wall in left to cut the Aggies’ lead to 4-3. The long ball was the fourth of the year for Czimskey.
Parker Dalton belted his fifth home run of the year in the bottom of the fourth to increase the A&M lead to 5-3.
The Dalton homer was all Baylor reliever Willie Kempf allowed in 4 2/3 innings of relief. Tim Matthews retired all four men he faced to keep the game close for the Bears.
Linebaugh (2-5) lasted two-complete innings and allowed four runs on five hits. He struck out two and did not walk a man.
