Kat Tracksters Defend Back-To-Back Crowns

After back-to-back years winning both the men's and women's Southland Conference outdoor track and field championships, the Sam Houston State Bearkats head into the 44th annual SLC outdoor meet as underdogs.

Competition in the outdoor championship begins with the decathlon and
hepthalon on Friday morning as Stephen F. Austin hosts the competition in Nacogdoches.

Texas-San Antonio and Texas-Arlington are the favorites on the men's side and Texas State-San Marcos is the front runner for the women.

Texas-Arlington has won the men's title seven times, but the Mavericks' last championship was in 1997. Texas-San Antonio won the men's outdoor track and field crown in 2001.

"UTSA and UTA are the front runners on paper and expect SFA to be right there with them since the meet is on their home track," Sam Houston head track and field coach Curtis Collier said. "Our men are a little banged up right now, but, if everything falls right, have a shot to be in the top four. "

Four of the last five years, the women's outdoor track and field Southland team champion has been either Texas State-San Marcos or Sam Houston State and the battle in 2007 should be between these two teams again.

"The Bobcats are the favorite on paper but we're going to give it everything we have," Collier said. "The track and field team has taken a lot of pride in the role they've played in Sam Houston athletics winning back-to-back Southland Commissioner's Cup titles and everyone knows how much this meet means to the race for Commissioner's Cup points."

Among the top competitors for the Bearkat women will be senior Jennie Sewell and freshman Jessica Fisher.

Sewell is a six-time Southland Conference pole vault champion, winning all four years in the Southland indoor and two of her three years outdoors.

Sewell holds the best mark in the Southland this year with a vault of 13
feet, 3.5 inches.

Fisher was the Southland "Freshman of the Year" as the Bearkats won the women's indoor championship in February. She holds the second best time in the 100 meters (11.65) and the fifth best in the 200 meters (24.13) this year.

Fisher, Tiffany Singleton, Ashley Cassalini, and Desiree Taylor also have the league's top 4x400 relay time of 3:42.64 going into the outdoor meet. Singleton and Taylor ranks third (54.75) and fourth (56.04), respectively in the league in the 400 meters individually.

Darnesha Stonum and Tiana Lee stand first and third in the Southland
rankings in the 400 meter hurdles with times of 1:01.45 and 1:02.08,
respectively. Allison Ferries ranks third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase
(10:49.06) and Jamie Spivey stands thid in the SLC long jump rankings (19 feet, 3.5 inches).

On the men's side, the Bearkat 4x400 relay team of Lane Dennis, John Thomas, Michael Courtney, and Chris Edison stands first in the Southland with a clocking of 3:08.45.

Dennis ranks second in the SLC 400 meter hurdles (51.46) and Courtney is third in the league in the 400 meter dash (47.04). Chris Cralle stands third in the hammer (182 feet) and Morten Munkholm ranks third in the 1500 meters (3:49.96) and fourth in the 800 meteres (1:52.33) Matt Adkisson stands fourth in the league's pole vault rankings (16 feet, 6.75 inches).
