MILAN, Italy — Texas A&M freshman Andrea Pavan will compete in the Telecom Italian Open beginning Thursday at Castello di Tolcinasco Golf and Country Club.

One of six amateurs in the field, Pavan was invited after winning The Omnium Championship, a professional event on the Italian Tour, in October. Pavan joined the A&M golf team in January.

The Italian Open has been played since 1925 and has been a part of the PGA European Tour since 1972. Past champions include Bernhard Langer, Greg Norman, Sandy Lyle and Billy Casper.

The tournament will be trimmed from 156 players to the top 65 after Friday’s second round. The final round is scheduled for Sunday.
