HUNTSVILLE -- Tanya Hooser went 3-for-4 and knocked in six runs including a three-run double to end the game with a run-rule in the bottom of the fifth inning as Sam Houston State defeated Northwestern State in the second game of a Southland Conference softball doubleheader Saturday.
The Demons won the first game of the doubleheader 4-3.
Sam Houston STate (33-22, SLC 20-9) clinched a second place regular season finish with the victory in the nightcap. The Bearkats will be the number two seed in next week's Southland Conference post-season tournament and play in the 1:30 p.m. game on the tournament's opening day Thursday.
Brandi Crnkovic (16-10) was the winning pitcher for SHSU, limiting
Northwestern State to three hits and striking out six Demons.
Sam Houston totaled its 12 runs on 15 hits and three Demon errors. Stephanie Mosley went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and Amy Brown was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Northwestern State (28-29, SLC 16-13) scored four runs on four hits and an error in the top of the third inning for the victory in the first contest.
Amanda Glenn (17-10) spread 10 hits over seven innings for the victory. Sam Houston left nine runners on base.
The two teams will meet in the third game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday at Bearkat softball complex.
