SHSU Baseball Drubs Demons

NATCHITOCHES – Sam Houston State pulled off a rarity on Saturday against Northwestern State.

The Bearkats became the first team ever to defeat the Demons in back-to-back 10-run rule wins after their 13-2 victory in Southland Conference baseball action at Brown-Stroud Field. SHSU defeated the Demons 11-1 in eight innings on Friday.

The loss dropped the Demons to 21-25 overall and 11-11 in league play while SHSU improves to 29-19 on the season and 13-10 in the conference. The Bearkats also increase their lead to 1 ½ games over the Demons in the SLC tournament race. NSU now trails Stephen F. Austin by a game for the sixth and final tourney spot.

On Saturday, SHSU used powered 20 hits – 17 of those singles – to ignite the rout.

Keith Stein and Austin Boggs each had three hits while five other Bearkat players had two hits apiece.

NSU finished with six hits, three of those coming in the seventh and final inning.

NSU starting pitcher Ben Rodriguez (3-4) took the loss after allowing seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits in three innings of work. Fraser Robinson and Justin O'Neal combined for four innings out of the bullpen and allowed six runs on 10 hits.

Jesse Marshall (7-3) got the complete game win after giving up two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

The series will conclude at 1 on Sunday with NSU expecting to start Jimmy Heard on the mound and Sam Houston State going with Jon Lindenberger.
