COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 11 Texas A&M scored six runs in the third and fifth innings on Saturday afternoon and cruised to a 14-6 win over Dallas Baptist at Olsen Field.
Blake Stouffer went 1-for-1 with three RBI, three runs scored and three walks. He improved his season RBI total to 69, good for 10th-most in a single season by an A&M player.
Craig Stinson tallied three hits and drove in three runs on the afternoon.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 38-11 while the Patriots dropped to 25-23. A&M returns to Big 12 action next weekend when they travel to Manhattan, Kan., for a three-game series against Kansas State.
“I thought David Newmann had his best start of the year,” A&M head coach Rob Childress said. “It is easy to have a letdown after you have already won the series. He threw up five goose eggs after the first and gave us a chance to come back. This team loves to compete and be on the field and they never quit playing the game.”
After the four-run first, Newmann (8-1) settled in and held the Patriots scoreless over the next five frames. He struck out seven hitters in the game.
The Aggies got two of the runs back in the bottom of the first with RBI singles by Luke Anders and Stinson. DBU starter Victor Black (4-5) avoided further damage by striking out Brian Ruggiano and Daman Aaron with the bases loaded.
A&M took the lead in the bottom of the third by scoring six runs on just one hit. Four different DBU pitchers combined to walk eight hitters in the inning.
Three two-run homers by Stouffer, Stinson and Dane Carter in the bottom of the fifth earned the Aggies a 14-4 lead.
DBU scored two runs with a bases-loaded single in the seventh by Nick Santos to cut the A&M lead to 14-6.
