Kats Prevail In SLC Softball Tournament Opener

HUNTSVILLE -- Brandi Crnkovic spread five hitters over seven innings while striking out eight batters as Sam Houston State shut out McNeese State 3-0 in the first round of the Southland Conference softball tournament Thursday afternoon at the Bearkat Softball Complex.

Sam Houston State (34-23) took advantage of two Cowgirl errors to score all three runs in the fourth inning. Holli Hatcher's pinch hit single scored the first run. Sarah Parich added an RBI single and Amy Brown an RBI double to complete the scoring.

McNeese State (30-31) was led at the plate by Liz Morvant and Shayla Cormier who each had two hits. Crnkovic upped her record in the pitching circle to 17-11. Jana Jones (12-9) was the loser for McNeese.

Sam Houston State will play the winner of the Texas State-San Marcos vs. Texas-San Antonio game at 11 a.m. on Friday morning in the tournament second round.
