COLLEGE STATION -- The 7th-ranked Texas A&M softball team gears up for postseason play this weekend as it heads to the Big 12 Championships at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. The No. 4-seed Aggies open tournament play against No. 5-seed Nebraska in Friday’s quarterfinals with the first pitch slated for 2 p.m. (CDT).
Fans can listen to A&M’s tournament games live and free of charge on AggieAthletics.com through the new Aggies All-Access. Those attending the games can listen to the action inside Hall of Fame Stadium on or around 88.9 FM. The game will also be aired locally in Bryan/College Station on Sports Radio 1150 The Zone.
“We are very excited about the Big 12 Championships,” A&M head coach Jo Evans said. “Our goal is to go there and win the tournament and gain some great momentum heading into the postseason.”
The Huskers enter Friday’s game with an overall record of 37-17, 10-8 in league play. Nebraska split its regular season finale with Missouri last weekend. NU fell to the Tigers, 5-0, on Saturday but used four hits to scratch three runs on Sunday to claim a 3-1 victory over 25th-ranked Missouri.
A&M carries an overall record of 39-9, 12-6 in conference play into the tournament. The
Aggies dropped a tough loss to Baylor on Saturday to finish out the regular season. A&M led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Aggies were unable to close the door on the 7th-ranked Lady Bears, falling 5-4 in 10 innings.
During regular season play, the Aggies handed Nebraska a pair of 1-0 losses in College Station to improve A&M’s all-time series advantage to 27-21 over the Huskers.
The winner of the A&M/Nebraska game will advance to play in a semifinal game at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The 2007 championship marks the first year the tournament has a single elimination format.
The Aggies are 14-19 all-time at the Big 12 Championships. Last season, A&M fell to Oklahoma 13-6 on Thursday, in the opening round. The Aggies bounced back to beat Texas 5-0 before exiting tournament play on Saturday with a 5-3 loss to Missouri.
The winner of the Big 12 Championships receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The field of 64 will be announced on Sunday, May 13.
