COLLEGE STATION -- Texas A&M’s Anna Lubinsky has been name the Southwest Region Senior Player of the Year, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced today.

To be considered for the honor, the player must be ranked in the top 50 nationally or top 10 regionally during her senior year; must have developed over a period of four years into one of the best regional or national players; and must have contributed the most to her team in leadership, sportsmanship, tennis performance and tennis improvement during her collegiate career.

“Anna has been a fantastic example of a true student-athlete,” A&M women’s tennis coach Bobby Kleinecke said. “She has given all she has had in all arenas, and she is very deserving of the honor.”

Lubinsky, from Richardson, Texas, is ranked No. 25 in the nation in singles with a 25-10 overall record this season entering the NCAA Singles Championship next week in Athens, Ga. Lubinsky posted a 17-5 mark in dual matches, all played at the No. 1 line.

Lubinsky, who has been ranked as high as No. 17 in the nation this spring, went 9-2 in Big 12 Conference matches only to become the Big 12 No. 1 singles champion. It was the third Big 12 singles title of her four-year career, having won at the No. 6 line as a freshman and at the No. 3 line as a sophomore.

This past fall, Lubinsky was ranked No. 1 in the region after winning the ITA Southwest Regional Singles Championship and earning an automatic berth into the ITA National Indoor Championships.

In doubles, Lubinsky and partner Nicki Mechem were ranked as high as No. 22 in the nation this spring. The pair went 28-5 overall and was the Big 12 No. 2 singles champions for the second consecutive year with a 10-1 record.

A three-time all-Big 12 selection in doubles and a two-time all-Big 12 selection in singles, Lubinsky currently ranks second in the A&M all-time career records in singles with a 109-45 mark, and she will end her career ranked second in doubles victories at 107-41.

Lubinsky has been the recipient of the 2006 and 2007 Aggie Heart Award, a prestigious honor presented by the head coach to the player on the team who goes above and beyond both on and off the court. The two-year co-captain also has been named an All-American Athlete by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

A three-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 first team and a member of the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team, Lubinsky graduate summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in finance on Friday.

Lubinsky will now be considered for national honors. The winner will be announced at ITA Awards Banquet at the NCAA Championships.
