COLLEGE STATION -- Texas A&M softball senior Sharonda McDonald and juniors Megan Gibson and Amanda Scarborough were named to the 2007 NFCA Midwest All-Region first-team, the selection committee announced this week.
“I am very happy for Megan, Amanda and Sho,” A&M head coach Jo Evans said. “They have played a huge part in our success this season and this honor is well deserved. They represent our program and university with class, dignity and pride. It is my pleasure to coach them and to be a part of their college experience.”
McDonald, an All-Big 12 first team selection, earned her all-region spot as an outfielder. In April, she was also named a National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American. McDonald started all 50 of A&M’s games and has the second highest batting average on the team at .359. The Houston, Texas native currently holds the A&M career record for steals (148) and runs scored (182).
Gibson, who was selected as a utility player, leads the Aggies with a .398 batting average. She has hit 10 home runs and has driven in 34 runs. Gibson, a native of Spring, Texas, holds the team-lead in slugging percentage at .754. She also holds the Aggie career home run (40) and walks records (115). In 136 innings of work in the circle,
Gibson, a member of the All-Big 12 first team is 16-3 with a 1.39 ERA.
Scarborough, who hails from Magnolia, Texas, was one of two pitchers named to the first team. She also earned Co-Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and All-Big 12 and Academic All-Big 12 first team accolades. Scarborough was named to the 2007 CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic Softball University Division All-District Team for the second consecutive year and has also been named one of 11 finalists for the 6th Annual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award. In the circle for A&M, Scarborough owns a 21-7 record with a 1.15 ERA, fanning 181 batters in 176.1 innings of work while allowing just 27 walks. At the plate she is batting at a .317 clip while hitting, a team leading, 11 doubles, along with six home runs and 41 RBIs.
The 7th-ranked Aggie softball team will begin NCAA Championship play on Friday as it faces the Sam Houston State Bearkats at 4:00 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex in the College Station Regional.
