SUGAR GROVE, IL -- Austin Schauer and Bobby Gates led a spirited Texas A&M rally on Friday at the NCAA Men's Golf Central Regional as the Aggies climbed into 10th place going into Saturday's final round at Rich Harvest Farms.
The top 10 teams and two individuals will advance to the NCAA Championships May 30-June 2 in Williamsburg, Va. The 12th-ranked Aggies tee off at 8:05 a.m. and are paired with Wisconsin and Michigan State.
A&M was in 21st place after opening with a 320, but fired a one-under 287 on Friday for a 607 total. Schauer shot a four-under 68 and Gates posted a three-under 69 to lead the effort. Schauer's round tied for the second best in school history in regional play.
"Austin and Bobby carried us today," A&M Coach J.T. Higgins said. "They played outstanding golf and that got us back into contention. I was proud of the whole team for the way they battled. If we can put together a solid round tomorrow, we have a great chance to make it to nationals again."
The Aggies are looking to advance to the nationals finals for the fourth straight year. The last time that happened was when A&M had 11 straight appearances from 1977-87.
No. 21 Tulsa leads by seven shots with a 585 total, followed by No. 23 Louisville (592), No. 7 Lamar (594), No. 3 Alabama (596), No. 14 Tennessee (603), Minnesota (604), Texas (605), No. 5 Oklahoma State (606), Texas Tech (606), A&M (607), Wisconsin (609), Michigan State (609), Northwestern (609), Southeastern Louisiana (613), Illinois State (614), Wichita State (618), Western Illinois (619), Baylor (620), SMU (623), Kansas (624), Nebraska (624), Colorado (625), Oklahoma (626), Purdue (630), TCU (647), Siena (657) and Texas Southern (687).
Lamar's Dawie Van Der Walt is the individual leader at four-under 71-69=140.
A&M's Bronson Burgoon is tied for 11th place at 73-74=147, while Schauer is tied for 15th (80-68=148) and Gates is tied for 35th (83-69=152). The Aggies' Trey Todd is tied for 102nd (84-76=160) and Martin Piller is tied for 112th (84-78=162).
