Blinn College head football coach Brad Franchione took the national championship trophy to the Bryan city council meeting tonight.
The city council in Bryan proclaimed Tuesday, Dec. 15, as Blinn Buccaneer National Championship Day, and the city council in Brenham will do the same on Thursday, Dec. 17.
The Buccaneers won the National Junior College Athletic Association Championship in the Citizens Bank Bowl on Dec. 6 in Pittsburg, KS, defeating Fort Scott (KS) Community College. It was Blinn’s fourth national title and the second under Franchione.
The Buccaneers were led this season by dual threat quarterback Cameron Newton and running back Mike Hayes. Newton, who is ranked by Rivals.com as the top recruit from among junior college players, passed for 2,833 yards and 22 touchdowns, and rushed for 655 yards and 16 touchdowns. Hayes scored 17 touchdowns and finished the year with 1,269 rushing yards and 329 yards in receptions.
