NEW YORK -- Jason Giambi of the New York Yankees has agreed
to meet with baseball steroids investigator George Mitchell. The
slugger says he will address his own actions but not those of
others.
Giambi, the first active player known to cooperate with the
former Senate majority leader in his probe of baseball's steroids
problem, has also apologized to commissioner Bud Selig, the owners
and players for suggesting that they were responsible for any of
his actions.
Giambi was quoted in U-S-A Today last month as seeming to admit
to steroids use several years ago, when first time offenders were
not penalized. Selig threatened to discipline Giambi and said he
would factor cooperation with Mitchell into his decision.
The decision by the New York Yankees star came after long
negotiations between lawyers for the players' union and Major
League Baseball.
