WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - Officials at Wimbledon have
surrendered to the elements and called off play for the day after
only two singles matches had been completed.
A rain delay of nearly four hours held up the start of play.
After they finally managed to get going, defending champion
Amelie Mauresmo raced past Mara Santangelo 6-1, 6-2 in just 57 minutes. And 2004 champion Maria Sharapova finished off a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ai Sugiyama just as the rain returned to the All England Club.
Venus Williams left the court after winning the first set of her
third-round match and did not return.
Organizers called things off with about 90 minutes of daylight
left in the cloudy sky over southwest London.
The middle Sunday of the fortnight is a traditionl rest day so
they'll pick things up Monday.
