LUBBOCK, Texas -- Dan Spencer, associate head coach on
Oregon State's back-to-back College World Series championship
teams, and Trent Petrie were hired as assistants today by Texas
Tech.
Spencer will have the same title under Larry Hays, overseeing
pitchers and catchers while also serving as recruiting coordinator.
He had those duties for the Beavers, who last month became the
first team to win consecutive national titles since L-S-U a decade
ago.
A Texas Tech infielder in the late 1980s, Spencer spent the past
eleven seasons at Oregon State, including the past three as
associate head coach. He coached at a pair of junior colleges
before joining the Beavers.
Petrie, who played one season for Tech in 1992, spent the past
two seasons as the hitting coach at New Mexico. The 36-year-old
also was an assistant at Oklahoma State. He will be the infield
coach and help with recruiting.
Daren Hays, the head coach's son, was reassigned from hitting
coach to director of operations.
