The Rudder Varsity Gymnastics Team had their first home meet of the season that resulted in a victory against five other high schools.
The Rangers gained a lead from the first event and never looked back. Rudder had a season-high score of 146.6. Richland High School from the Ft. Worth area was second scoring 125.9. Third place team was Birdville High School with a 108.9 followed by Humble Atascosita, Haltom High School and Alvin.
Enoch Rodriguez had a good day winning four out of six events, plus the All-Around. Michael Gonzalez also had a good day winning the other two events making it a sweep for Rudder High School.
Rodriguez was last year's State Champion in the All-Around and Pommel Horse; and continued his winning ways with first place finishes on Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, Vault and Horizontal Bar. Michael Gonzalez, a member of last year's State Championship Team, won the Still Rings and Parallel Bars while placing second in the All-Around.
Rodriguez and Gonzalez had an excellent supporting cast from their teammates, with several having set personal-records.
Marc Herrera finished fourth in the All-Around and put up some big numbers on Vault, Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar; placing second, third and second on those events respectively.
Brendan Leo earned a third place finish on Floor while providing the team with some valuable points, and placed fifth on Vault.
Freshman Kenneth Newbold also earned valuable team points with his fourth place finish on Pommel Horse and sixth place on Still Rings. He also finished fifth on Floor.
Fellow Freshman Cody White competed on the Horizontal Bar for the first time and surprised the competition with his top five finish.
Other honorable mentions were Roberto Ochoa on Pommel Horse and Shay Leo on Rings and Parallel Bars. Shay, the third of three freshmen, has added badly needed depth to the Parallel Bars team.
The Rangers are now 23-5 and will have two weeks off to concentrate on grades with the end of the grading period being Feb. 12th. They will also have time to make the necessary improvements and changes in their routines before hosting the Rudder Invitational.
The Rangers will host Kingwood, the top scoring team in the state, along with Round Rock High School who handed Rudder a loss last month. Big time Highland Park High School from Dallas will be attending along with 2009 State qualifier Boswell High School.
The Rudder Invitational competition starts at 11:00 am on February 26th, at the James Earl Rudder High School Gymnastics Facility.
