COLLEGE STATION -- The Sweet 16 Texas A&M soccer team plays 12 matches at the Aggie Soccer Stadium to complete its spring schedule, head coach G Guerrieri announced Monday.
"We have some good teams coming to play us in Aggieland this spring, featuring some traditionally strong programs as well as some rising programs from inside our state and across the nation,” said Guerrieri. “Many of these programs have a history of playing in the NCAA Tournament which is the level of teams we need to consistently play to challenge and improve ourselves."
A&M’s spring matches consist of five dates beginning with its annual 7v7 Tournament on Feb. 20. The Aggies face four different opponents in one day. Then, on March 6, the Aggies face North Texas and Utah before hosting Baylor and NCAA Tournament team Marquette on March 27, followed by Stephen F. Austin and BYU on April 2. BYU advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship in 2009. Houston and SMU are the final matches of the spring season on April 10.
“The spring, non-traditional season, serves as a wonderful working laboratory for our players and coaches to experiment and test ourselves, so that we'll be ready to compete for and win trophies in our traditional season this coming fall. In addition to all the physical, technical and tactical training we get out of our typical 20-hour training week, we also host a dozen different opponents to provide great opportunities for our players to learn in a variety of competitive experiences."
A&M participated in its 15th straight NCAA Tournament in 2009 and advanced to the round of 16 for the 10th time in program history. The Aggies ended their season in Tallahassee, Fla., after falling 2-1 in double overtime to Florida State. The team compiled an overall record of 15-7-3 and a 6-2-2 mark in Big 12 play.
Admission to the spring contests is free.
"Hosting free exhibition games for our fans in Aggieland during the spring are a nice value-added perk for our supporters – the best college soccer fans in America," stated Guerrieri.
