AUTUN, France (AP) - Italy's Filipo Pozzato has won the fifth stage of the Tour de France. And Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara managed to hold onto the leader's yellow jersey for a sixth straight day.
Pozatto outsprinted runner-up Oscar Freire at the end of the medium mountain stage.
Pre-race favorite Alexandre Vinokourov of
Kazakhstan fell late in the 113-mile trek. Bruised and bloodied,
Vinokourov scrambled back onto his bike and lost only a minute and
21 seconds to the leader.
Cancellara now holds a 33-second advantage over second place
Andreas Kloeden of Germany, who recovered nicely after
falling early in stage five.
Pozzato moves up to third overall, 35 seconds off the leader's
George Hincapie is the top American as they near completion of the first week of racing. He's in fifth place, 45 seconds behind Cancellara.
