AUSTIN, Texas -- The U.S. Rowing team has named former Longhorn Ruth Stiver to its roster for the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Stiver, a first-time National Team member, was Texas' first-ever Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) First Team All-America selection in 2004 after walking on to the UT squad in 2000.

Stiver (Madisonville, Texas) will team with Jennifer Reck (Detroit, Mich.) in the women's pair after the duo finished first at the 2007 Pan American Games Trials.

The former Longhorn, who currently resides in Arlington, Va., and Peck are teammates at the Potomac Rowing Club in Washington, D.C.

Since leaving UT with a master's degree in advertising, Stiver claimed second place in double sculls at the 2006 Head of the Charles and took first place in the quadruple sculls at the 2006 US Rowing National Championships. Stiver also added a second-place finish in double sculls at the 2006 U.S. Rowing National Championships.

As a collegian she was named a CRCA South Region Scholar Athlete in 2004 and earned CRCA All-South Region First Team accolades in 2004 and second team honors in 2002 and 2003. Stiver also added UT Academic Team MVP honors in 2003.

At Texas, Stiver helped pace the Longhorns' first varsity eight boat to a 12th-place finish at the 2003 NCAA Rowing Championships, marking UT's best national finish in program history. Stiver also aided the first varsity eight in its second place finish at the 2003 Henley Women's Regatta in Oxfordshire, England.

The 27-person U.S. squad includes 16 senior national team veterans and four rowers who have Olympic experience.

The rowing competition will be held July 14-19 at the Lagoa Rowing Center in Rio de Janeiro. Heats and repechages will be held July 14-16, with finals being held July 17-19. The U.S. will be competing in all 13 rowing events.
