CARNOUSTIE, Scotland -- Matching par in round two was all
first-round leader Sergio Garcia needed to remain atop the
leaderboard at Carnoustie. The Spaniard is 6-under-par after 36 holes of the British Open. That's two better than South Korea's K.J. Choi, who carded a second straight 69.
Spain's Miguel Angel Jiminez is at minus-3 after a 1-under 70
and is tied with Canada's Mike Weir (weer), who fired a 68.
Jim Furyk shot a second consecutive 70 and at minus-2 is tied with fellow American Boo Weekley, who had a 72.
Defending champion Tiger Woods has a lot of work to do in order
to become the first golfer in more than a half-century to claim a
third straight Claret Jug. The world number one double bogeyed his
first hole en route to a 3-over-par 74 in round two, leaving him
seven shots off the lead with 36 holes left to play catch up.
First-day sensation Rory McIlroy, an 18-year-old amateur from
Northern Ireland, struggled to a 76 after yesterday's bogey-free
68, but still made the cut, something Phil Mickelson and Scotsman
Colin Montgomerie failed to do.
