Cowboys' Ellis Aggravates Tendon On Day 1

SAN ANTONIO -- Dallas Cowboys football coach Wade Phillips'
first practice of the season got off to a bad start today when
linebacker Greg Ellis aggravated his rehabilitating Achilles'

He had to be replaced by undrafted rookie Alex Obomese. He
zoomed to the top of the depth chart because top pick Anthony
Spencer isn't signed.

Neither is third-rounder James Marten, who could be getting
valuable experience at tackle because starters Flozell Adams and
Marc Colombo went on the physically unable to perform list today.

But things went well otherwise, with team drills ending on a
very fan-friendly note: a 60-yard strike from Tony Romo to Terrell

Extra points: The Cowboys are bracing for a long wait before
Spencer signs. Only one player drafted before him has a deal and
agents like using other picks as barometers of how much their guy
is worth. ... RB Alonzo Coleman joined Adams and Colombo on the PUP
list. Rookie WR Isaiah Stanback went on the non-football injury
list because of a problem dating to his college days. ... Phillips'
dad - Bum Phillips, who coached the Houston Oilers and New Orleans
Saints - watched from the sidelines. "He told me today he was glad
he was out of it," Wade Phillips said. "I don't know what that
means." ... Longtime Cowboys scouting director Larry Lacewell, who
rarely visited during Parcells' tenure, also was on hand. ...
Phillips said this was the first time he opened camp without
players being in pads. Players will be fully suited up tomorrow,
when they'll have their first day of two-a-days.
