COLLEGE STATION, Texas—Texas A&M Head Football Coach Dennis Franchione welcomed everyone who was expected to report in the 105 allotted by NCAA rules on Sunday, Aug. 5.
“This is a very difficult time of the year for me as a head coach,” Coach Fran explained. “We preach to our young people about the importance of team, and that includes walkons and everyone. We have many deserving young men who have worked hard in the spring and summer, but they will not be able to report today because the NCAA mandates only 105 can report before school starts. We have to balance our depth chart in order to practice.”
Assistant head coach and running backs coach Kenith Pope was not in attendance as he underwent minor surgery on Friday and should be back at practice in one-to-two weeks. Graduate assistant Ronny Feldman will work with the running backs during this time.
One particular player was wearing a proud smile on Sunday as backup center Kevin Matthews made his way back from Canton, Ohio, where he watched his father, Bruce, inducted in the NFL Hall of Fame on Saturday.
The Aggies open fall camp on Monday with practice beginning at 4:30 p.m. All fall practices are closed to the public. Texas A&M opens the 2007 campaign against Montana State on Sept. 1 with kickoff set for 6 p.m. at Kyle Field.
