Aggies Complete Second Day Of August Camp

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- The Texas A&M football drilled for two hours at the McFerrin Athletic Center and the adjacent grass practices on Tuesday.

"It was a good workout," Aggie head coach Dennis Franchione said. "We spent more time outside and it was warm, but they fought through it well. We're getting lots of reps for just being in shorts. It takes some mental toughness and discipline to fight through it all. They did a pretty good job of it. There's always room for improvement, but for the first two days we're headed in a pretty good direction. A little more offense and defense went in today -- a few more adjustments. It was a little mental challenge for them. We're trying to get as much installed this first week and then we'll build on that. The bulk will get done by Saturday. That adds to the challenge of practice. There's been great carryover by the older guys. There's a few new wrinkles but I thought they picked up on that very well."

Franchione commented on the NCAA rule change that moved the ball back five yards to the 30-yard line for kickoffs.

"You're going to see some impact from it," Franchione said. "I don't think there's any doubt about that. We live a little more in a 'wind' area, so there will still be some that go out of the endzone. And at Colorado with the altitude."

Franchione was asked if the return of the Big 12's top kickoff return tandem in Kerry Franks and Pierre Brown was a benefit with the rule change.

"We hope so," Franchione said. "We did well in that category last year and we have a pretty good nucleus coming back from that unit. So we like to think it does. I think every football coach is going to spent more time than ever before on kickoff and kickoff return. Because, let's face it, there were some weeks when you're weren't going to get a return. When you had (former Colorado kicker) Mason Crosby kicking off to you, spending too much time on returns probably wasn't going pay dividends."

The Aggies will hit the practice field on Wednesday in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets. All fall camp workouts are closed to the general public.
