Aggie Football Players Head To NFL Mini Camps

By  |

COLLEGE STATION, TX -- Several Texas A&M senior football players are off to their respective NFL mini-camps this weekend highlighted by defensive back Jordan Pugh, a sixth-round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers.

“We’re proud of Jordan and all of our seniors who have the opportunity to compete for positions in the NFL,” Aggie Head Football Coach Mike Sherman said. “It is the dream of most every young man who has played football to get the chance to play in the NFL. It is a tough road, but I know all of these young men will give everything they have. I am especially proud of the fact that five of the six players already have their degrees from Texas A&M and the sixth is six hours from completion of his degree program.”

Pugh was given jersey #29 since #25 is already being worn by Marcus Hudson. Another Aggie with the Carolina club is running back Mike Goodson.

“It’s great that I know Mike (Goodson) and I am looking forward to the chance to compete,” Pugh said. “The team told me either safety or corner and I played both at Texas A&M. Just like I did for the Aggies, I want to contribute to the team and help us win. It doesn’t matter which position I play. I played on most every special teams unit at A&M so maybe I could help in those areas. I am going to learn and give it my very best.”

After the NFL draft last weekend, fullback/tight end Jamie McCoy signed a free agent contract with the St. Louis Rams where he will be reunited with his former offensive coordinator and current Ram wide receivers coach Nolan Cromwell. McCoy has played both fullback and tight end for Texas A&M and could be utilized in much the same manner with the Rams’ organization. Former A&M defensive back Danny Gorrer is also on the Rams’ roster.

Linebacker Matt Featherston signed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and offensive lineman Lee Grimes signed a tryout contract with the Bucs. A former A&M player on the Bucs roster is defensive lineman Michael Bennett.

Offensive lineman Kevin Matthews signed a free agent deal with the Tennessee Titans and was given jersey #60 as he competes for a spot on the roster.

Another offensive lineman, Michael Shumard, signed a free agent contract with the Denver Broncos and will wear jersey #64.
